Things that go bump in the night.

If this doesn't give you nightmares, I don't know what will.

They used to have several of these along the front window of a shopping center on Center Street here in Provo. Either somebody bought them or they realized that no one had shopped in any of their stores while the man-headed swans were guarding the entrance.

Actually, that is a replica of a painting by the famed italian artist named Benito Gortoni who did his best work in the early 1700's. He got the vision for his interpretation of a swan when he was gazing out the window of his studio at the pond on his farm and noticed a white swan and a black swan swimming there. It brought to mind his wife's mother who was living with them. She always wore black, with a little white skull cap over her head. He thought she was as lovely as a swan so he patterned the face of the swan after her. It is not the face of a man but the "beloved" face of his mother-in-law who spent hours and hours in his presence offering constructive criticism of his art.
Sadly, shortly after completing this painting he was arrested for murder on trumped up charges regarding a domestic dispute. He died a year later in prison. You should have bought the bird--it is priceless. Creepy, but priceless.
