Columbus Day

Today we celebrate the day three ships fell off the edge of the world and arrived in the Americas. Venezuelans call it Día de la Resistencia Indígena, or Day of Indigenous Resistence. In the United States of America, we call it Columbus Day.

In elementary school, it was a mythical day where we made construction paper recreations of the Niña, the Pinta, and the Santa María. In fact, that's one of my only memories of kindergarten in West Valley before the big move to California.

Now, the day just doesn't get much play. It should really be more than a Post Office holiday. I'll go to my classes today, but I won't be happy about it.

It's a much bigger deal on the east coast. My kids always got the day off in Boston - the whole town would shut down. We'd always go to the beach and stop at a farm and get apple donuts. I totally miss Columbus Day in Boston. There's nothing like that here.

Ooh, I want to go to Boston...that sounds fun! I am actually leaving in 15 minutes to go see Taylor perform in the first graders Columbus Day assembly. So, not everyone has forgotten!

I was at work today and went out on the front porch looking for the mail about four times before I realized it was Columbus Day! I also have to say that you are the only person I know who would remember the last activity in Kindergarten before moving. Surprised?..No!...amazed?...always!

Yesterday was Columbus Day and I worked My half day or 4 hours because the church shuts down everything at 4:30pm. I am always looking forward to your blogs because they are so fun and at this STAGE OF LIFE I really need a good laugh. When I was working way back in the dark ages we had a holiday called "Arbor Day" and we felt really spoiled so the state took away our Arbor Day and also our Columbus Day and combined President's Days into one Holiday in February and that was a real bummer!!!! As State Worker's we really felt picked on. Oh well.

Michael- I am so sad to tell you I have never heard a Weezer song- can I still be your blogger friend? When Whit gets back from her trip I will make her play me one so I can see if they are ipod worthy. And I noticed on Robyn's blog you wish you could come to CA- anytime you need a place to stay you know our door is open!
